What IS Sickle Cell

Sickle Cell Disease is a hereditary blood disorder in which the body makes sickle-shaped red blood cells. Unlike normal round red blood cells, Sickle Cells are stiff and sticky. These cells block blood flow and can cause pain and/or organ damage. Sickle Cell is caused by an abnormality in the haemoglobin molecule. It affects people who originate from tropical regions, sub-Saharan Africa, India and the Middle east.
