Breaking News

http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/local/healthscience/72024-chop-researchers-make-progress-on-sickle-cell-disease-treatment

Hello all (:
Its always great news to hear of great things happening for Sickle Cell! I went to CHOP for all of my childhood and even though it always seemed to me that they didn't care about us (the Hematology floor was seriously outdated compared to others), it's great to see that they are taking some behind the scenes action. Please take the time to read this brief article!

"The symptoms include severe pain, anemia, chest pain and breathing problems, stroke, infections, and many others," said CHOP scientist Gerd Blobel. "So it's a really serious disease." - From the article CHOP researchers make progress on sickle cell disease treatment  by Jessica McDonald

Update

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you all that my leg is feeling a lot better. Thank god I nursed myself back to health before it became a major crisis! I know there are some Sickle Cell Warriors out there who aren't doing so great and I pray for y'all everyday!!!

We are a family of fighters and survivors, we will get through this one step at a time!

Gatorade, Heating pad, medicine... Tools for survival

stupid crisis

So I get annoyed whenever I go into a crisis but particularly when it is from something so simple. Last Night I was FaceTiming and charging my phone so I had to sit on my leg *BAD IDEA* as soon as I stretch my leg out BOOM pain hits me. I take some Motrin but it dosent do much. Oh! and the worst part about all this is the fact I'm at my best friends house when this happens(but her and her family are also very supportive and understanding with my Sickle Cell). When I am sick I shut down, and don't want to talk to anyone but I tried to remain chipper, but in my mind I'm screaming WHY WHY WHY?! Why must my leg be burning, pounding, aching, stabbing, throbbing, in pain right now. I woke up about every hour, twisting and turning trying to find a comfortable position. I took more Motrin and water and it's the same pain. I  had to call out of work and all but even though I am losing out on money (sad face) I need to make sure I don't get worse! This is what I have to deal with... Random bursts of pain. It really sucks, but it's what I have to deal with. It's time to find something else to do to prevent crisis other than just my Hydroxyurea. I will keep everyone updated!

Work work work work

Hey guys I've been super busy lately. All I've been doing is WORK WORK WORK and trying to get things together for school. ( and also trying not to throw myself into a crisis from over working myself ) but anyway... Working in retail I go home stuff every night. I am trying to find a job where I don't have to do so much moving, but for now this has to work because I NEED MONEY.

STAY STRONG

I just want to raise awareness for a disease that ruins quality of life for so many people in the world. Worrying about taking your meds everyday, when you will get sick again, health insurance, prescriptions, getting a job that will understand, friends who will include you, a partner who will love you no matter what, how will my kids/ future kids be affected?! Being thrown into a sickle cell crisis at any time means you could be sick on vacation, at your wedding, An important meeting, your kids graduation. It's a life of worrying, and planning to a T! Why do so many other diseases get such grand exposure and when I tell people I have Sickle Cell they ask " what is that? "

I get very discouraged by my lack of support. Yes I am asking for financial donations to help start my T-shirt line for awareness BUT I also just want blog views, to just READ a blog post. Or not even my blog GOOGLE sickle cell!! Educate yourself. People say "whatever you need just let me know" when you let them know it's crickets. But it won't stop my fight, it won't kill my voice. I will keep posting and talking about sickle cell because more needs to be know on about the most common genetic blood disorder.

Sickle Cell Dictionary: Hemoglobin

or haemoglobin is a complex protein that contains iron and transports oxygen in red blood cells. Sickle Cell is caused by a mutation in the haemoglobin gene; causing an abnormal hemoglobin ( Hemoglobin S ) which distorts red blood cells into abnormal, and crescent like shapes.

Hemoglobin S is the most common abnormal hemoglobin.

What's your type?

Of course my bold type is O- so no saving the world one blood donation at a time for me ( you definitely wouldn't want my bad blood) but I do want your good blood! I encourage everyone that can to donate as soon as possible, you truly CAN save a life! I have had to get blood transfusions many times in my life, and if it wash for those O- donors lord knows what would have happened!! Look out for blood drives in your area, Check Out Red Cross' Website for more info.

Sick Days

When I am sick people probably think I am the biggest B-Word.. All I do is sleep, or watch tv I ignore all texts/phone calls and have the shortest temper. My family understands that's just the pain talking but others aren't so used to it lol. Sleep Is the best medicine in my book, especially on rainy/dark days like today is in my town. I'm currently not in pain but I know a lot of warriors who are right now! Stay, hydrated, medicated and positive!!!
